The drawn area (water or land plus a shore zone) is what the species engine asks GBIF for, and so it decides which species are even candidates for an agent's page. An observation inside it is an indication, never proof: a species is shown only when the agent's own sources place it here. The dashed box is the old method, kept for comparison: everything inside the rectangle, water or not, which missed rivers and counted farmland.
